Revisiting to rethink

Ten years after transforming a former chocolate factory into a collective living environment, a2o returns to De Chocoladefabriek. Not to celebrate what was designed, but to discover what happened afterwards.

On 21 October, we presented De Chocoladefabriek Revisited at Timelab in Ghent. The publication looks beyond the original architectural intentions and explores how a building evolves once people make it their own.

Which spaces have stood the test of time? How have residents adapted and appropriated their surroundings? And what can we learn from the relationship between architecture, shared spaces and community life?

These questions formed the starting point for both the publication and a broader panel discussion on collective living.

For a2o, revisiting a project is more than looking back. It is an opportunity to question our assumptions, understand the impact of design decisions and bring new insights into future projects.

Because architecture is never truly finished. It continues to evolve through the people who inhabit it.

The conversation continues.

Missed the conversation? The panel discussion was recorded and will soon be available to watch and listen to.
